THE BRONZE AGE

The Bronze Age for the Justice League can be taken from the time that Aquaman disbanded the JLA following the destruction of their satellite headquaters to the similar destruction of the JLA Orbital Refuge by the Hyperclan. During this peroid we see massive diversity in both team structure and style.

Out of the failed Detriot League came the highly sucessful Justice League International which as two teams (Justice League America and Justice League Europe) gave a humourous bent to the superhero genre during the prevaling mood of the Dark Knight. The relation of the multiple spin off titles is best illusitated by the diagram below.

The failure of the "Avengers Clone" League led to a radical rethink within the DC offices. Spawned from the LEGENDS mini-series the new League was formed from characters that were not currently under revamp. From the start the humour element was played up by plotter Kieth Giffen and scripter J.M. DeMatteis, initally sucessful the new formalu was not to everybodies liking, particularly with the introduction of such characters as G'nort and General Glory to the roster.

As the last writer of the second JKA series Gerald Jones introduced a slew of new Leaguers, mixed stories and continuations of plots from his time of Justice League Europe. The constant examination of members private lives and sexualities left little time for plot development. It was not surprising that the book was canceled along with the entire franchise in order to make way from Grant Morrison's New Era.
