Overview
Few people can claim to have been born out of crisis like Kimiko Hoshi. Transformed into a superhero by the manipulations of the enigmatic Monitor she began as a harsh driven superheroine with little patience or compassion until she stood with the greatest of Earths heroes against the forces of the Anti-Monitor. Few people beyond the Linear Men realise what existed before the Crisis and even Doctor Light has forgotten how she accidentally distracted the Supergirl of a different time inadvertently causing her death. The incident changed Kimiko even if the true reason for the change is now unknown to her.
Since then she has immersed herself in her studies of Solar Radiation and technology finding that each time she became Doctor Light that her confidence would take another blow.
Background
At the dawn of time there existed but one universe, however by the interference of the Oan known as Krona (who dared use a time viewer to pierce the dawn of creation) the universe was split a sunder. Suddenly there were two opposite universes, the normally matter universe and the dark anti-matter universe. At the same instant two powerful entities came into existence - the Monitor and the Anti-Monitor - they would be the embodiment of each universe. The Anti-Monitor sought to destroy the positive matter universe to increase his own power, he did this by releasing a wave of anti-matter into our universe that devastated entire sectors of space. All this was watched by the Monitor who began drawing together the heroes of Earth as well as creating new heroes to combat the threat such as Harbinger, Pariah and the second Doctor Light.
Kimiko Hoshi was a scientist specialising in Solar technology and Stellar Astronomy prominent in Japan under her father - a respected scientist. The mother of two via a failed marriage she continued her work in an effort to harness the limitless solar energy open to us. While she was observing the red giant star Vega the Monitor made his move. Using a space warp along her line to sight he allowed her to observe a sudden massive energy burst from the star that he had engineered, the energy burst knocked her unconscious. As planned when Kimiko awoke she found that she possessed the ability to manipulate and generate electromagnetic radiation in the form of visible light. She donned the costume of Doctor Light and became a hero in time to join the pantheon of heroes fighting against the Anti-Monitor.
The somewhat harsh and ill tempered Doctor Light joined the other heroes of the Justice League, the Outsiders, the Legion of Superheroes, the Justice Society and dozens more in battling the Anti-Monitor. In that battle she witnessed the death of the original Supergirl (not Matrix - but Kara of Krypton) at the hands of the Anti-Monitor. Kimiko blamed herself for her death which caused a marked change in her personality, she became less confident and less confrontational. Now that the events of the Crisis have passed and many no longer remember those versions of others or themselves that existed before it the event of the death of that Supergirl has been wiped from her memory. She now attributes the change in personality to a change in diet.
After the Darkseid manipulated anti-hero riots the Justice League decided to reform, a fact that was noticed by the Kilg%re and Maxwell Lord who together conspired to turn the Justice League into a true international peacekeeping agency. To this end Lord began recruiting members for the League without their knowledge or permission. The first person that he contacted was Kimiko whom he offered a signal device to. She was at the UN when it was attacked by terrorists and used the device to call for backup. The mystified League came to the signal and with the help of Dr Light they managed to save the day. She remained with the League while they continued the investigation into the origin of her signal device. When Lord tried to repeat his unauthorised recruitment using Booster Gold he was rumbled and Doctor Light quit angry at having been manipulated by him.
Light maintained links with the JLI and when the Global Guardian Rising Sun was left in a comatose state by the Queen Bee she was brought in as an expert. She also returned from reserve duty when Maxwell Lord was seriously injured and replaced by Kurt Helmlich (an agent of the Queen Bee). While she was inactive as a hero she visited Doctor Soon in Japan who advised her of a condition that applied to some paranormal powered people that have an adverse reaction to some artificial sweeteners. When she cut them out of her diet her personality altered dramatically causing her to become much more reserved.
Raised a Buddhist which equated darkness with the body and light with the mind she decided to change her entire out look. She changed her name to the sexless Kimiyo so that people would consider her by her work rather than her gender. She also changed her costume when she joined the reformed JLE. The first thing that she wanted to do when she arrived at the London embassy was to analyse the alien technology used by the Royal Flush Gang (supplied by the Weapons Master) however it was stolen by the super-villain known as Deconstructo. He then used it to wreak havoc in London before being defeated.
Doctor Light found herself often acting more in her role as a scientist for the League and set up her own laboratory in the castle the served as the JLE's next headquarters while there she started experiments into creating a body for the displaced spirit Erewhon. She often found herself serving as second in command and as the rational voice against the actions of her more brash team-mates such as Flash and Green Lantern. When Hal transformed himself into Parallax she took over leadership of the team. During her time with the League she became close friends with Ice of the American branch after they shared a journey to a working holiday together. She also found herself the focus for the romantic intentions of Global Guardian the Rising Sun but she persuaded him to be just good friends.
Doctor Light retired from the Justice League when in reformed once more after the battle with the Overmaster and returned to her civilian life and looking after her children full time. But occasionally the citizens of Japan will be able to catch a glimpse of Doctor Light flying overhead looking after their safety.
Powers and Abilities
Kimiyo Hoshi has the ability to absorb electromagnetic radiation in the form of visible light and to expend that energy in ever form from brilliant flashes to precise laser beams. She can also form illusions and internaise the energy to allow her to fly. She however possesses no form of invulnerability and is subject to wind burn like the rest of us at high speeds.
