HAWKMAN: HAWK CHAMPION
Hawkman created by Gardner Fox and Dennis Neville.

"The Winged Helmet, the chest symbol we wear -- I was always told they were badges of honour, but they never meant much to me until today. I realise now that I'm part of a tradition in which I can, and do, justly take pride. It means something to be Hawkman" - Katar Hol on finding out about his predecessor Carter Hall.

Overview

From each generation of man each of the Animal Gods chooses a champion, an Avatar to be their presence and power on Earth. Those men that follow the way of the Hawkgod are the Hawkmen. From Prince Khufu of Egypt to Katar Hol of Thanagar they exhibit extraordinary courage and will power. Locked into a deadly cycle of birth and death with the Egyptian Hath-Set and the immortal Vandal Savage the Hawkmen and their partners are one of the true archetypes of the heroic age.

Carter Hall, the first of the true Hawkmen, was the longest serving chairman of the Justice Society while Katar Hol was the planetary hero of distant Thanagar who rejected his homeworld when exposed to the heroic ideals of Earth. Now fused into one being along with all the previous Hawk Avatars, Hawkman struggles to keep his sanity amid the thousand voices calling for blood from within.

Background

We all know of the gods, the immortal beings that exist across the universe generated by the seed of divinity thrown out by the "Godwave" as the first world was destroyed creating the Olympians, Asgardians and a thousand other pantheons across the face of creation. Beyond these gods are the Endless and still beyond them in the Presence that created the Source itself. However between the so called Gods and the Endless there is a half way house, a collection of spirit like Animal Gods.

The Animal Gods are anthropomorphic representations of animals and beasts that served man as his earliest gods. They were the totem animals of the tribal society. In each generation they choose a champion and via a rift between our dimension and theirs they elevate that champion to the position of Avatar. An Avatar possesses latent abilities gifted by his God. However many of them do not realise their true nature and live their lives in a strange parody of their God. Many of the Gods themselves are not actually evil but rather they adhere to animalistic ways true to their existence, as for the Avatars often the those that realise their true position and power are corrupted by that power. This is the story of the Hawk Avatars, of Gabriel, the Silent Night, Nighthawk, Carter Hall, and perhaps the greatest of them all, Thanagarian Wingman Katar Hol.

The first hawk Avatar in pre-history was the leader of the Hawk Tribe. At that time each of the tribes coexisted peacefully enough. Each was led at least in part by one of the Avatars. All that changed with the coming of a mysterious meteorite whose strange radiation caused startling effects in two beings - one became the Immortal Man who would be reincarnated through the generations to face the evil of the other. That other was Vandar Arg who was the son of Vandar Arg (who had been mistakenly killed by the time-travelling Rip Hunter who sought to destroy the evil that would unfold in centuries to come). The radiation had the effect on Arg of transforming him into some strange unnatural parody of an Avatar, an immortal with a brilliant mind and eye for the future - he came Vandal Savage. Savage was also the brother of that first Hawk Avatar. The Avatar saw him as a menace wanting to stay in one place and grow crops instead of wandering following the prey, the wild Avatar could not comprehend this and sought to remove Savage. In a short battle the Avatar died, killed not by a blow to the stomach but by the stones that he had ingested with his food to be more like the Hawk which ruptured his intestines. That action paved the way for human cultivation of nature and civilisation, it also marked the beginning of the battles between Vandal Savage and the Hawk Avatars.

It would not take long for the next Avatar to appear and then the next and then the next after that. Each time the pattern was repeated, for a time the Hawk Avatar would either led his people or help them and then run across Vandal Savage. The repressed memories of the death of the first Hawk Avatar would resurface and drive the poor fool over the edge into a murderous quest to kill Vandal Savage who was all to willing to put the Avatar out of his misery of life. Each time a Hawk Avatar was killed the grudge became greater - the urge for the next Avatar to kill Savage all the greater.

About a thousand years after Savage (as the Pharaoh Cheops) had built the Great Pyramids the country of Egypt had declined. The Hyksos conquered Lower Egypt and founded the Fifteenth dynasty, ruled by a cruel Pharaoh and his even crueller high priest Hath-Set. There was rebellion however from Prince Khufu Kha-Tarr the latest in the long line of Hawk Avatars, helped by his true love a Hyksos Noblewoman called Chay-Ara who despised the cruelty of her own people. Khufu used a mysterious Ninth Metal (which when charged with crude electrical cells allowed him levitated) to fashion a harness, he also learnt to control his flight by using special wings. The Ninth Metal was a gift from the Hawk God whom Khufu recognised as Horus (a different God in his own right).

In a desperate plan Chay-Ara allowed herself to be captured, Khufu then staged an attack where he made it look as if he was trying to kill Chay-Ara to stop her talking. He was captured and she then fed her captors counter-intelligence telling them that she no longer trusted Khufu after he tried to kill her. It all worked. Chay-Ara gave the Pharaoh a rigged Ninth Metal harness, when he tried it on without the wings he disappeared into the stratosphere only returning to Earth then he took the harness and died on impact with the ground. In the confusion a band of rebels in Ninth Metal harness and wings attacked. Hath-Set mortally wounded Khufu with a Crystal Dagger before being cut down by Khufu's archers. With his dying words he cursed Khufu that they would meet once again on the cycle of reincarnation. Shortly afterwards Khufu died from his wounds.

New Hawk Avatars appeared. Centuries later Daedalus used remnants of the Egyptian Ninth Metal to create wings for him and his son, Icarus whom was the then Hawk Avatar. They set out to attack Savage who used mirrors to reflect the rays of the son melting the wax that held their wings together killed Icarus. There were others, in Rome the Christian Gabriel answered the word of what he thought was his lord and became a Hawk Avatar. He was later killed by the Lion Avatar. Since the days of the first tribes the Avatars had degenerated to fighting whenever they met. The cycles continued. In the wild west of the United States Hannibal Hawkes became a Hawk Avatar creating the identity of Nighthawk to battle outlaws. He was killed in a shoot out with Savage.

Thanagar was a slave planet located in the Polaris solar system. Ruled by the Empire of Polara they were freed in an uprising by the legendary Kalmoran who led his army to overthrow the Polarans and drive them back across deep space to their homeworld. Freed and ruled by Kalmoran the Thanagarian society blossomed into a renaissance of art, literature and craft. However as the centuries passed the Thanagarians who had been slaves became slavers ruling a vast empire responsible for bringing huge numbers of slaves to fuel to industries and manual positions of Thanagar itself. All creativity was lost by the Thangarians, their own crafts and arts disappeared replaced by the treasures raped from a dozen worlds. The slaves lived in planet wide slums known as Downside while their Thanagarian masters ruled from lofty towers above them.

Of all the Thanagarians perhaps the greatest of them born for generations was Paran Katar, with an interest in anti-gravity he studied metallurgy, biology, alchemy and sorcery in an effort to unlock its secrets. While still in a junior position he was assigned as an invasion scout to the planet Earth when he met a man by the name of Carter Hall. Hall was a multimillionaire archaeologist with a mutual interest in anti-gravity, or more specifically in the Ninth Metal used by the ancient Egyptians. Hall was the Hawk Avatar during the 1930's and 40's and as such he was the reincarnation of Prince Khufu. Paran Katar as Perry Carter befriended Hall and helped him research the Ninth Metal of the pharaohs. It was this that let Paran unlock the key to the anti-gravity properties of Ninth Metal. Paran out of interest substituted some of his own alloy in the experiments of Hall to see what he would do with it.

For a time Hall didn't really do much with the metal until via archaeological circles he obtained quite by chance the Crystal Dagger that had ended his life as Khufu. He was reawakened to his Egyptian origins. Quite accidentally he ran into Shiera Sanders a journalist for the Sentinel, he instantly recognised her as the reincarnation of Chay-Ara and tried to convince her that she was reincarnated. Their discussion was cut short by an electrical blackout caused by Dr Anton Hastor (the reincarnation of Hath-Set) who demanded that the city surrender to him. Knowing that he must act Hall cobbled together a costume and decided to try out a Ninth Metal harness and wings that he had been working on. He confronted Hastor and the two old enemies recognising each other did battle. Hastor was seemingly killed, through he survived and would come back and attack Hall time and time again. Deciding to continue operating with the mask and wings Hall created the identity of Hawkman and became one of the new breed of "Mystery Men".

Hawkman was an instant success in the skies above New York and he was one of the heroes summoned by Doctor Fate to battle the Nazi invasion fleet heading for England. With the intervention of the Spectre the eight heroes won the day and at the suggestion of the President formed the Justice Society of America. Carter as Hawkman became the first Chairman of the JSA and would later become the longest serving chairperson and one of the most active members full stop. His adventures led him across the world from the hidden city of Fiethera in Greenland to many archaeological digs in forgotten places. During the war as part of the Justice Battalion and the All Star Squadron he was joined by Shiera as Hawkgirl. When the Justice Society disbanded Carter used a Thanagarian teleportation device that he had received as a present from Paran to teleport the JSA mysteriously from the HUAC meeting. Like many of his comrades Carter retired and married Shiera.

Meanwhile Paran Katar had fallen in love with a Cherokee called Naomi who was acting as a translator on one of the Hall's archaeological digs. They were married and both returned to Thanagar. Back on Thanagar Paran put his invention of Ninth Metal to use creating a guard of winged policemen called Wing Men, they were a glorious reminder of the heroism of Carter Hall and Paran borrowed many of the symbols and imagery of his Earth friend. The act of creating Ninth Metal was easy enough however powering the anti-gravity effects is a lot more difficult. Using his study of sorcery Paran somehow captured the Hawkgod and kept it chained in another dimension from it's own. The paradox created sufficient energy to power enough Ninth Metal to create giant floating cities across the surface of Thanagar replacing the old towers.

In time Naomi would produce a son called Katar (it is traditional for a Thanagarian to be called after his fathers last name). When Naomi saw the Downside she was horrified, this combined with her feelings of being out of place on Thanagar caused her to ask to be returned to Earth. However when the child was born Paran refused to let him go as well (Thanagar was a very sexist society) and Naomi was sent back to Earth where she became a medicine woman. In time Katar would be raised in the traditions of Thanagar learning about the crafts, ways and heritage of his own people that had been wiped away by the culture raped from other worlds. He was a student of history and Kalmoran was his hero. He also learnt to use the ancient weapons of his people. Eventually he would become a Wingman in the corps that his father had created. On one of his first missions he encountered Shayera Thal II who had been left in Downside when her mother Shayera Thal I gave birth to her at the age of thirteen to avoid a scandal, while Katar was now romancing the now adult elder Shayera.

Horrified by the way that the Downsiders were treated Paran Katar started a secret smuggling operation using his resources to pass medicines and food to the slaves. His activities were noticed by the commander of the Wingmen called Byth who was also running his own smuggling operation shipping weapons to the Downsiders and shipping the narcotics that they produced to the rich Thangarians in the floating cities. Katar became increasingly depressed with what his people had become and took to using the narcotics that Byth was shipping into the Highside. While on a recreational hunting trip with Shayera I and their fathers they came across a band of animals, Shayera shot and wounded one forcing Katar to move in on his own and end the poor beast's life. He tracked it to a burrow and found that it dead in front of its mate and child, to his horror he saw cave markings on the wall. The creatures were not beasts, but rather intelligent - if primitive - life forms. Leaving the creatures alive, Katar returned to the hunting party horrified at what he had seen done.

The continuing horrors changed Katar, he developed an edge both morally and professionally as a Wingman, developing skills and contacts that made Byth realise how dangerous he really was. Byth then conspired to eliminate father and son. In a staged event Katar was tricked into killing his father, and sentenced to imprisonment on a remote island. Meanwhile Byth exposed his own smuggling as Paran's and was declared a hero. On the island Katar hit withdrawal symptoms of the drugs that he had been using and in a crazed rage he stole the wings a hermit was making and in the process killed him. The hermit's brother, a priest, revealed that the wings were to have been a present to Hol. Katar learnt a lot from the Priest and his time on the island in solitude after the priests natural death. He learnt to survive and slowly the narcotics worked their way from his system.

Kept young as a side effect of the mystical energies of the sorcerer Ian Karkull Carter Hall continued working as an archaeologist along side his wife. The two had a son, Hector who they often took to see their friends in Fiethera where they became the godparents of Norda (the son of a winged Fietheran and a human). Hector would envy the way that Norda could fly with his parents and he could not. When Superman appeared over the skies of Metropolis and started a whole new heroic age the Justice Society members for the most part were content to remain retired and let the new Justice League have the stoplight. Things all changed when Vandal Savage reared his head again. Savage captured a number of the former Society members including Carter Hall. They were saved by the intervention of Barry Allen and Jay Garrick. The JSA was semi-reactivated with Hall as their chairman. Shortly afterwards he joined the Justice League of America as liaison to the younger heroes.

At first Hawkman found a culture clash in the League. His old fashioned conservative thinking clashed with the idealistic liberal Green Arrow. He also found a friend in the scientist Ray Palmer (alias Atom II) and assisted the League when they went off world meeting adventurers such as Adam Strange. Hawkman was later joined by Hawkgirl in the League and the two became part of the back bone of the League and Justice Society. When Hector fashioned his own costumed identity and with other JSA progeny petitioned for membership they found themselves turned down for by their mentor and parents who were winding down their careers rather than gearing up for new younger team-mates. Hector and friends formed the team Infinity, Inc. and at their press conference he revealed his identity to the world. A side effect of revealing his own identity was for him to reveal that of his fathers as well, at first this put a further strain on their relationship.

Carter Hall as chairman of the Justice Society led them into an extra-dimensional world to battle ancient Norse gods to stop Hitler's insane plan to bring about Ragnarok. The JSA seemingly remained there fighting the same battle over and over again to hold the stalemate and prevent the conclusion of the battle in the destruction of all reality. The only characters spared from the fate were the Spectre and Doctor Fate both of who told the world little of what had happened. The world and government considered Carter Hall and the JSA deceased. Later Hector was killed by the latest reincarnation of Hath-Set, his spirit became the third Sandman before Morpheus the true Dreamlord righted events and let Hectors spirit depart for the next cycle. Ironically Hector's son Daniel would, after Morpheus death, replace him becoming the true Dreamlord and a member of the Endless.

Since Paran Katar had returned to Thanagar decades ago their observations of Earth had been scant however when an alliance of alien warlords including the Dominators and Khunds decided to invade Earth their attention was renewed. They placed a spy on Earth called Fel Andor, he passed himself off as Carter Hall Jnr., Hectors brother and the successor as Hawkman to Hall. He recruited an Earth woman called Sharon to pose as Hawkgirl and the two briefly joined the Justice League. Fel worked hard to create the image of a hero and worked with both Superman and the Atom. When the invasion was over Thanagar decided to open up diplomatic relations with Earth. At this stage Fel was in the way, Sharon was murdered and he returned to Thanagar secretly. Only a few members of the JLI including J'onn J'onzz learnt the truth but they choose to keep quite to protect the name of Hawkman and the new diplomatic relations.

Back on Thanagar itself it had been ten years since Katar Hol and been sentenced to imprisonment on that remote island. His term over, he found himself returned to the Downside of Thanagar where he used the skills that he had learnt on the island to set up a clinic to help the other Downsiders taking up where his father had left off. Operating in secrecy he made use of smuggling operations run by Byth (who had become a decadent Highsider) to get medicines. His clinic and operations where however noticed by Wingman Shayera Thal II, the daughter of lady he briefly dated and she was the little girl that he encountered on of his first missions Downside. Forming an uneasy alliance they cracked the gun running operation of Byth. Katar Hol then confronted Byth, but the criminal escaped by using a shape shifting drug called Kortan. Katar Hol's record was cleared and he was reinstated as a Wingman. Both he and Shayera were allowed to wear special winged helmets as a sign on honour.

Eventually Byth fled to Earth and it was decided to sent Katar and Shayera to Earth as well to accompany a Thanagarian museum exhibit at the request of Thanagarian Ambassador Darl Klus. While away Shayera was ordered to spy of Katar and report back to her superiors who feared Katar's increasingly independent nature. When they actually reached Earth they found a society very different to that which they had just left. After an initial encountered with Byth they discovered that Earth police had very different limitations and powers, a solution was found by where Katar and Shayera would be allowed to operate legally but without their Thanagarian weapons.

Byth killed a policeman than Shayera was dating and then framed Shayera for his own murder after she persuaded him in a rage. Katar was forced to hand over Shayera to Earth authorities to preserve diplomatic relations before he was ordered back to Thanagar himself. Katar disobeyed orders to return home and exposed Byth's plan and in the process proved Shayera's innocence. Katar was once again a hero in the eyes of the masses. While Shayera returned back to Thanagar with the captured Byth, Katar was the subject of a public relations campaign that saw him identified with the name Hawkman. The title meant little to Hol until he was forced to travel into the past by a villain known as the Fiddler who was trying to kill the Golden Age Flash. Along the way he encountered his father and discovered the existence of a prior Hawkman in the shape of Carter Hall. Upon returning back to his own time Katar threw himself into the Hawkman role and in the process became more liberal and idealistic.

Katar grew increasingly distant from Thanagar until the point where he actually started helping refugees from Downside escape to Earth to a community in Chicago called Netherworld where meta-humans, mutants and aliens formed their own society away from the normal world. When they were discovered Shayera and Katar applied for diplomatic refuge on Earth. Initially they were accepted but Thanagar offered the secret of Ninth Metal in exchange for them. Eventually they withdrew the offer and Ambassador Klus applied for refuge himself. After a battle in Netherworld with Count Viper Shayera was seemingly killed and Katar was badly injured. Meanwhile due to the help of Waverider the Justice Society had returned from limbo including Carter Hall. Carter found the badly injured Katar and took him to Naomi (Katar's mother) to be healed. From her Katar learnt about her people and their traditions. He learnt much about himself and his abilities as the next Hawk Avatar after Carter Hall, began to develop. He learnt to see the emotional state of other people in their auras and to communicate to an extent with certain animals.

Returning to Chicago Katar designed and wore a new costume leading many to think that it was a different Hawkman in the skies. This was a careful play to lure these enemies to him because he suspected that Shayera was still alive and being held by them. The plan worked and with due course Count Viper made his move. It turned out that Viper was actually possessing Shayera's body while she languished in a mental asylum in his last body. During the course of the battle Viper switched bodies with Katar who found himself in the body of Shayera. Freeing his partner, he with the help of the Wonder Woman and the Justice League managed to capture Viper. Then in a spiritual quest the two Hawks defeated Viper and returned to their own bodies. Viper meanwhile leapt into the body of the current Viper Avatar and would return later to plague the life of Hawkman.

The existence of two Hawk Avatars at the same time (Katar Hol and Carter Hall) combined with the over use of Ninth Metal weakened the prison of the Hawkgod, allowing it to escape. It headed straight to Thanagar homing in on the Ninth Metal in the process destroying all floating cities and ravaging the planet leaving millions dead. With that dealt with it felt the pull of the Ninth Metal across the void to Earth and set out to punish those that would have enslaved it. All those wearing Ninth Metal felt it approach as both Carter and Katar suffered hallucinations and lost control at times forcing them to battle each other at one stage. Shayera was saved this by Naomi rituallly burring her wings and harness. Carter Hall possessed by the Hawkgod ran amuck during the temporal anomalies in the run up to the Zero Hour. Hawkmen from dozens of different timelines kept fluxing in and out of existence. Katar confronted the Hawkgod in an effort to stop the killing, he was joined in battled by both the Hall's. With the help of the New Blood Mongral they managed to drive the Hawkgod back to its own dimension. However as they succeeded Katar, Carter and Shiera were fused physically into one being, a true fully awakened Hawk Avatar.

The new being was patterned for the most part on the physical body and personality of Katar Hol, but he was more than that he was a fully awakened Hawk Avatar. He now no longer needed a Ninth Metal belt and wings as he now possessed true wings sprouting from his back which he could withdraw inside him if necessary. Within him were the combined spirits of all the past Hawk Avatars including Carter and Shiera. The whole new world of Avatars was opened to him as he found that Count Viper had leapt into the body of the Viper Avatar. Viper played a deadly game with Katar playing him off against lesser Avatars. During this he learnt much about his condition, Avatars like him are created when a normal person is exposed to dimensional rifts to the dimension where the Animal Gods live. This is what happened when he defeated the Hawkgod and sent it back into the dimension of the Animal Gods.

The transformation on Katar was difficult for his friends to handle, particularly for Shayera who had become his lover. The change in personality that it caused in Katar alienated Shayera and she left for Detroit where she continued being Hawkwoman without the wings. Katar himself found that he was battling old foes in the form of Hath-Set, the Gentleman Ghost and the Shadow Thief. He also found himself joining the Justice League becoming more and more of a traditional superhero, perhaps under the influence of Carter Hall's memories that he now possessed. He accompanied the JLA into space and while with them saw the devastation of Thanagar first hand, he helped free the survivors from the aliens that sought to colonise the world but refused their offer to stay and lead them putting that part of his life permanently behind him.

Trouble began to set in when the demon Neron awoke the spirits of all the past Hawk Avatars in Katar's head. The increasingly militant voices began to rule his life and like countless Hawk Avatars they pushed him after Vandal Savage who had killed many of them. Katar set out in a blood thirsty rage after Savage. He managed to beat Savage and would have killed him if it had not been for intervention of Rose Moon, a psychic from the Netherworld who reawakened the personality of Katar Hol and brought it to the fore. The vengeful spirits were angry at Katar for not killing Savage and decided to punish him by taking control of his body and murdering innocent people and leaving runes next to the bodies. Once he regained temporary control (he didn't remember the murders) he noticed the runes, they were text that only he had seen them before. They were the cave markings from the hunting trip on Thanagar that only he had seen.

Katar sought the help of the Justice League and the Martian Manhunter but they wouldn't believe him that he was dangerous. When the Manhunter tried to telepathically help he was over whelmed by the Hawk Spirits before Katar brought him round. They sought the aid of Arion the Immortal but he refused his help. For his own safety Katar was locked up on the JLA refuge in a garment that restricted the growth of his wings. After a decent night's sleep he realised that he was different, the Hawk Spirits were gone. They had jumped into the Martian Manhunter and had taken him over in their bloody quest for vengeance.

Katar managed to elude the JLA and sets out after the possessed Martian Manhunter. The Hawk Spirits seeking to get their revenge on Katar attacked Shayera but they were stopped by the intervention of Katar. Using the Martian weakness of fire he managed to get himself a breathing space as he tended to Shayera, as they declared their love Katar re-entered battle but was seriously injured. He was only saved by the intervention of Arion who used his magic (who had been researching the spell since they asked for his help) to allow Katar to reclaim the Hawk Spirits into himself. Knowing that the Spirits were too dangerous to be left on Earth he allowed Arion to transport him to the Realm of the Hawkgod with the Hawk Spirits. Shayera, Naomi and all of Katar's friends are then left to carry on their lives knowing that he is still alive, somewhere in some forgotten dimension and that one day he will return to those that he loves.

Powers and Abilities

The actual flight ability of Carter and Shayera Hall came from the Ninth Metal (sometimes called Nth Metal). When empowered the Metal acts opposite to the force of gravity repelling itself and anything attached away from gravitating bodies such as the Earth. The main anti-gravity force came from a Ninth Metal belt. Yet this provided pure "up and down" motion, to truly fly Hawkman used a pair of large prosthetic wings infused with small amounts of Ninth Metal (to counteract their weight). With the wings they could climb on thermals and glide on air currents. Carter often used ancient weapons such as daggers and maces.

Katar Hol and Shayera Thal were originally out fitted as Thanagarian Wingmen. This meant that they had wings and belts as patterned after Carter Hall's by Paran Katar, the main difference was that the Thanagarian wings were more solid and could be used as a bullet proof barrier if necessary. Both wore regulation body armour and were trained in the use of standard firearms.

As the combined Hawk Avatar Katar Hol now possesses true wings that grow and recede out his back as necessary. He also has the ability to see peoples auras, allowing him to tell peoples emotions and to spot other Avatars. Some other Avatars have developed quite powerful abilities based on their Animal God but as of yet Hawkman has not mastered these. He has however found he can defend himself against the spiritual attacks of other Avatars. As far as weaponry he carries throwing stars, his name sake the Katar dagger and a Thanagarian Graviton Pistol (which takes a week to recharge on Earth currents).
