Invasion Earth and the JLE
Numerious alien races have tried to invade or at least ravage Earth in the past, however major political groupings of these aliens have always been broken up by the Guardians of the Universe and their agents the Green Lanterns. With the downsizing of the Green Lantern Corps after the departure of the Guardians nothing was left to stop alliances between the military bent aliens in this sector of space. Many recognised Earth with its superhumans was a distinct problem so a alliance was formed that included the Thanagarians (home world of Hawkman III) , the Daxamites (a planet with individuals who gained Kryptonian like powers under a yellow sun), Khunds (a sever warrior culture), Dominators (a scheming race of cruel scientists), Psions (an old experiment of the Guardians of the Universe), the Citadel (rulers of the Vega system), and many others.
After months of ground work by mercenaries the Alliance made their move, forming a beach head in Australia they destroyed the JLI embassy in Canberra. The UN ordered superhumans to site tight while it decided how to respond, however many choose not to obey and the battle started in earnest to repel the invaders. It was to this initial phase of counter attacks that the League returned to. Stationed to the south Pacific the JLI with Wonder Woman dealt with Khund fighter convoys while other heroes dealt with other similar threats across the planet. At the sametime Oberon single handily captured an entire group of miniaturised Khunds, knocking they out he left them boxed up in the New York embassy kitchen.
The balance was turned by the Daxamites defecting to Earth's side (which would lead to Earth's first treaty with another world) and by the rebellion of the Alliances prisoners to form eventually the Blasters and LEGION. Beaten off. The superheroes around the world were left to help with the clean up operation. The JLI still in the south pacific had to deal with a string of crashed Khund space ships making sure no nasty surprises were left. In the process they discovered the newly formed Injustice League trying hopelessly to steal a Thanagarian craft, they were handed over to the military authorities just as the Dominators sought their revenge by detonating the Gene-bomb.
The Gene-Bomb was an experimental weapon that effected only those with the so called meta-gene, a section of DNA that makes it possible for humans to acquire superhuman powers. Across the planet thousands of people went down sick including a lot of people who never knew they had the gene in the first place. A mission was launched including several League members against the Dominator homeworld in an effort to retrieve the antidote to the sickness.
The Gene-bomb sickness was cured but it still left an effect on the meta-humans of Earth, Fire's powers were dramatically transformed, Metamorpho was raised from the dead, Booster Gold was revealed to have a dormant metagene and even Maxwell Lord found that he had the meta-gene. After the invasion there was a period a calm as people tried to come to terms with what they had just faced. Max returned to the mountain computer site in an effort to find out if the Kilg%re had known about his meta-gene. The remnants of the computer system, were detonated by the shattered remains of the original computer system (the Kilg%re having long fled) trapping Max, he was saved by Beetle and Ice (it turned out that Max had inadvertently summoned Beetle telepathically with his new found ability a side effect of which was a nose bleed each time he used it).
As superheroes were leaving the field hospital set up at Bellia Reve to deal with the meta-gene sickness they were handed invitations to a party at the NY embassy - it was a cover by Max and Oberon in an effort to review possible membership candidates. In the process Hawkman II quit, the Khunds in the kitchen returned to normal size only to find themselves in a house full of superheroes (they were killed when they tried to use the League teleporters to escape to Australia, unfortunately the tubes no longer existed in Australia and they were reduced to nothing). Out of the party goes Max announced that the JLI was expanding setting up a second team of superheroes permanently based in the Paris embassy. While the JLI remained the umbrella organisation there now existed two team the JLA operating out of New York (J'onn, Fire, Ice, Beetle, Booster, Gardener, Miracle and occasionally Batman) while the Justice League Europe operated out of the Paris embassy (Captain Atom, Rocket Red #7, Metamorpho, Animal Man, Power Girl, Flash III and the Elongated Man).
Two branches, One League
The spot light of the world switched for a time from the JLA onto the newer JLE, they found that the French were wary of the JLE and still held the Leagues predecessors the Global Guardians in awe. A scheme was set by the Queen Bee to discrete the JLE by having mind controlled former members of the Guardians attacking the League, she also set it up to look like the League had destroyed the Dome.
The world attention on the JLE gave members of the JLA the chance to catch up on personal problems as Beetle and Booster took repossession work (on a vampire). Still on the offensive the Queen Bee activated Beetle's conditioning and he was forced to attack Maxwell Lord badly injuring Oberon in the process, he was eventually stopped by the Huntress. Amanda Waller tried to remove the conditioning but ran up against hypnotic safe guards that shut Beetle's mind down, in the end it was up to Kent Nelson (well Nabu the lord of Order who was currently possessing the corpse of the deceased Kent Nelson). The process had to be repeated on Booster Gold to remove his inactivated programming. In the meantime Ice went for her first date with Guy Gardener and ran into the Black Hand while Fire began her training at the hands of Barda in the use of her new "living fire" abilities.
A serious crisis was faced when a young hood stole Barda's mega-rod after murdering his gang, friends and a number of police officers he was brought down by Miracle and the Huntress. This prompted Max to pay a visit on the Huntress and offer her membership (not with out a little use of his coercion power).
Back in Paris the JLE had traced the events back to Bailya, Power led a pre-emptive strike against the very core citadel of the Queen Bee that ended with an agreement between the two sides, Bailya would keep out of League's business plus the Queen would cut her links to Jack O'Lantern and the Dominator scientist that had been working for her and in return the League would steer clear of Bailya. Returning to Paris Metamorpho was reunited with his wife and Simon Stagg reared his ugly head. After further criticism from the press Captain Atom enrolled the entire JLE at nightschool to improve their French language skills.
In an effort to promote a sense to team harmony Max organised a tour of the active embassies by the current members of the JLI, in the process they saw the Canberra embassy being rebuilt, the outlandish going on's at the London Embassy, the efforts of Dr Light to revive the Rising Sun at the Tokyo embassy, the pool at the Rio embassy and the superior plumbing at the Moscow embassy. The League annexed the small island of Kooey Kooey Kooey (a sentient island somewhere in the pacific) as its landed holding on a request by the natives to keep the Russians and US from pressing for permission to build a military bases.
The JLE was called to reports of destroyed villages in central Europe while there they encountered the former inhabitants of the villages who seemed to be carrying some form a plague that turned the victims into pseudo-vampires, rendering them highly open to suggestion. The JLE became engaged in hand to hand battle with the victims to such an extent that a alert was sent for back up from the JLA.
The JLA arrived in a redesigned shuttle with Doctor Fate II (sporting a new gender to boot) who linked up with military forces in the area. The source of the plague soon became evident as a virus developed for Stagg Industries by a scientist called Dr Teasdale based on the strain called Poryphrya (the source of many vampire legends) the disease rendered the victim high suggestible but was eventually fatal. When Stagg double crossed Teasdale on a field test against human targets, the Doctor joined together with the latest Greyman in an attempt to gain their hands on Stagg's stockpile of the disease. Dr Fate and the Spectre brought this to the attention of the Lords of Order who declined to interfere. It was left to the combined forces of the JLI to stop the Greyman when his plan became evidence.
The Greyman sacrificed all of the victims at once and adsorbed the dream essences given off. In the process he severely injured Power Girl, killed Teasdale and only served to bring himself to the attention of the Lords of Order and the Lords of Chaos. They reduced the Greyman to a zombie who would continue his task without question or thought. In the aftermath Power Girl was rushed to hospital where emergency surgery conducted with Superman's help (his heat vision was needed to cut her skin) her life was saved but her power level was drastically reduced. The surgery was helped by machinery created by the former Green Lantern Kilowog who had just become the Leagues official Handyman.
The League entered another lull in external threats as internal matters once again came to a head. Chief among these were the antics of Beetle and Booster in using League funds to set up Club JLI, a resort project on Kooey Kooey Kooey that met with disaster when Major Disaster and Big Sur broke the bank (quite legally) and the island uprooted itself and went for a wander. Only the intervention of Aquaman with Major Disasters help stopped the run away island. Booster and Beetle were put on domestic duties as punishment which forced Booster to quit the League and help set up the Conglomerate. G'nort also returned this time against his arch enemy/best friend namely the Scarlet Skier and Mister Miracle left for a interstellar tour with Manga Khan (a robotic duplicate was left in his place without telling anybody).
Meanwhile in Europe the Crimson Fox became the first new member of the JLE replacing Animal Man who left for personal reasons. Metamorpho got to see his child for the first time, but only by defeating the Metal Men and Guy Gardener. A certain yellow cat made his first appearance and League members caused chaos at that years Film Festival.
Extreme measures.
It was at this point that the two Justice League teams began to operate more independently of each other by necessity of crisis in each of their locals that tired them up for days at a time in cases. In the US the journalist Wally Tortilini almost exposed the JLA's secrets before his story was suppressed by the Crimson Fox in her civilian identity.
Despero had returned, the killer had battled the old Justice League of America and had always proved hard to defeat. Now with having clawed his existence back from being a dispersion of free floating molecules he was after revenge from the League that he remembered. He destroyed the life support that was keeping the remains of Steel alive, he also killed Gypsies family and her entire town, he would have killed her had it not been for the intervention of J'onn J'onzz. In the battle Despero destroyed the League shuttle and the robotic duplicate of Mister Miracle. He was only defeated by the use of Mayavana by J'onn. Mayavana is the Martian ability to create dream reality in the mind of another, it is normally seen as a great gift between loved ones. J'onn used it to let Despero think that he had won, contented he devolved to an embryonic form. In the wake a funeral was held for Mister Miracle (or his robotic duplicate at least).
In Russia the Silver Sorceress and Blue Jay managed to escape their captivity. Jay fled to the JLI while the Sorceress returned to her home planet and in the process accidentally allowed the villains that had destroyed her world to escape to ours. Blue Jay managed to get to the Moscow embassy and was about to be handed back to the authorities by the hard line embassy chief before Metamorpho intervened and in the process he became the first superhuman from Earth to engage the Extremists.
The Extremists managed to defeat the JLE, the Rocket Reds and take control of the Earth's nuclear stoke pile before they transported the League to the planet Angor where they uncovered the truth behind the Extremists. The real extremists had actually been wiped out in the nuclear holocaust, the beings that had invaded Earth were actually created by a theme park as robotic attractions that had been taken over by Dreamslayer (the sole surviving real Extremist). Returning to our world the JLE defeated the robots by having their creator Mitch Wacky shut them down. Dreamslayer was temporally dispersed by the Silver Sorceress. The Sorceress and Jay became member of the JLE afterwards.
The JLE was forced to move into the London embassy after the Beefeater (a mad English would-be-hero) accidentally destroyed the Paris embassy. The move to London brought the attention of Metawise, a multinational criminal organisation that collects date on superheroes and sells it to supervillians, they kidnapped the JLE cat and implanted it with a camera and microphone in an effort to spy on the JLE.
Back in America the JLA was having a member ship crisis, the low number of members prompted a membership drive, made all the more serious by the return of Mister Miracle (who promptly took a leave of absence). As the Cluster dropped Miracle off, the League swapped the embryonic Despero for L-ron, in an attempt to get the murder off the Earth. The New Gods Orion and Lightray were brought in as members to increase the power of the team.
The Journalist Wally Tortilinii was having his own problems with Metawise, Inc who were after his notes on the JLA. This led him to help the villain Sonar escape from a bungled League training mission, in the process Tortilini found himself in a bar for supervillains. In a game of poker he won all their superweapons, and used them to protect himself against Metawise agents. However the villains got blamed for the destruction and were rounded up by the League just after they had reclaimed their weapons from Tortilini.
In Europe the JLE was having troubles with old villains after they had defeated the killer of Crimson Fox's parents they found themselves faced with the old League foe of Starro who claimed that he was just trying to get back to his homeplanet. It was a ruse and he quickly gained mind control over London and a large surrounding area before his central conscious managed to take control of J'onn J'onzz, in the end it was left up to Ice to freeze the central star fish into dormancy there by cutting the mind control of all the others. As par with the course the defeated Starro was kept in the fridge until he was unloaded onto Manga Khan in return for a future favour.
The JLA was rocked by the events surrounding the return of General Glory I and his subsequent framing by a romantic rival from the war, in the process Glory had to go up against his arch enemy again: the Evil Eye. In the end the truth was revealed and Glory was taken on board as a full time member to replace Orion and Lightray who quit the League for its lack of willingness to kill people. Afterwards J'onn, G'nort and Kilowog tried for an aliens together night out on the town, only to be arrested by the police.
The impending trouble to face the JLI started when Beetle tried to regain his shape after a period of inactivity, he was tormented by Gardener and the matter almost came to blows before General Glory suggested that it was best settled in the boxing ring. Beetle was easily wining the match when Gardener enraged, attacked Beetle from behind during the interval badly bruising him. J'onn threatened to throw Guy out of the League but before any action could be taken it was revealed that Maxwell Lord had been shot by a sniper out side the New York embassy.
