Genesis

When the ruler of the planet Appellax perished, a competition was declared to determine his successor. The claimants to the throne were sent to the chosen battleground of Earth, each one representing the seven dominant life-forms of Appellax. Each of the aliens then "recruited" armies from the inhabitants of Earth, transforming people and animals into duplicates of their own species: stone creatures, crystalline creatures, bird creatures, fire creatures, wood creatures, glass creatures and mercury creatures.

Five of the more prominent heroes of Earth were able to individually defeat five of the claimants. These heroes were the second Flash, the Martian Manhunter, the second Black Canary, Aquaman and Hal Jordan, the current Green Lantern of Earth. Of the five aliens they face, only two survived, safely imprisoned. The heroes were then captured by the sixth alien. Working together, the five used their combined might to overpower the alien and then went to find the seventh. The seventh claimant had, however, already been destroyed by Superman, who left before the other heroes could thank him for the assist.

It was the Flash who suggested that the five of them should form a team. While the others were a bit skeptical, they agreed, believing that together they could make more of a difference. They decided to think about it and give each other their final decision the next day. In the meantime, Aquaman took the two surviving aliens to a cave he'd found in Rhode Island, where they remained imprisoned. But the next day involved the heroes getting involved in a battle against the clandestine Locus organization and once again fighting the two Appellax aliens they'd imprisoned. The battle did not go entirely well, as the bird alien was taken by Locus for vivisection. The fire alien was killed and taken by the U.S. military. As they left the heroes, Black Canary commented that they worked well together and the heroes made the final decision to become a team.

Black Canary then called for a press conference at a hotel in Gotham City that had been one of the meeting places for the Justice Society of America, the world's first team of heroes. There, the five announced their decision to be a team. When asked if they would call themselves the "new JSA" Green Lantern replied, "Perhaps something with a bit more punch. Justice ... League?" Black Canary had almost literally been raised by the JSA members and in homage to them she then publicly announced the group as the "Justice League of America."

A League Of Their Own

The JLA initially planned to make their headquarters in Gotham but a certain Caped Crusader had other plans. Unwilling to share his city with several super-powered "well-meaning amateurs," Batman anonymously used his resources as Bruce Wayne to set up a new HQ for the Justice League. The headquarters was, fittingly enough, the afore-mentioned cave in Rhode Island. This cave was soon called the Secret Sanctuary and the League would regularly use it to hold their meetings. It's first piece of furniture was the preserved body of the fire alien, a fitting trophy.

To remain anonymous even to the League, Wayne acted through a third-party representative named Simon Carr. He also hired the League an inventor, a young man named Ted Kord. Kord created the League's security system, which was secretly funded by Wayne. Simon Carr's nephew Luke then became the team's handyman and technician. Luke, or "Snapper" as he was called, also made it his hobby to record the League's exploits. Wayne then had S.T.A.R. Labs equip the League with special signal devices. Thus, the JLA was able to continue their operations in a more efficient manner without the risk of interfering with the Dark Knight's own agendas.

The League went against various foes and menaces. At one point, the League was overcome by Xotar, The Weapons Master. Xotar was from the future and used advanced technology to cast illusions in the minds of the Leaguers, goading them into unwittingly battling each other. It seemed Weapons Master would indeed force the JLA to destroy itself, when Superman suddenly intervened. Quickly, he destroyed the illusion-maker and Xotar made a hasty retreat back into the future, accidentally transporting himself directly into the hands of his era's authorities. The League was greatly appreciative of Superman's help and they saw this as the perfect opportunity to offer him membership. While flattered, Superman felt he had to decline as he already had all his time taken up maintaining both his costumed and secret identity. However, he offered his assistance whenever the League required him. The League would indeed take him up on this offer several times over the years.

After working together for a short while, the JLA realized that not all members could be counted on to be available when menaces arose, as each of the members also pursued solo careers. So the team began adding new members to the roster, starting with the original Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) whom they had initially encountered shortly after their debut press conference. Not long afterwards, they added the second Atom (Ray Palmer) to their roster. Both members became pivotal additions for much of the League's history.

Not long afterwards, The Batman was offered membership. Although he considered himself a loner (this was before he met Dick Grayson), he joined the upstart heroes and assisted the Justice League often with his tactical genius. He grew a bond of respect towards Green Arrow and in later years this would strengthen into a bond of friendship.

Within a few more months, the League teamed up with its predecessor for the first time. The JSA were forced out of retirement when three of its foes (Wizard, Icicle and the Fiddler) joined with three JLA enemies (Chronos, Faust and Dr. Alchemy) in an effort to challenge both teams. The combined might of the two super-hero groups prevailed, and thereafter the two teams occasionally worked together whenever a crisis arose that was too large for the JLA to handle.

In the aftermath of their initial team-up, the original Hawkman (Carter Hall) decided he enjoyed working with the League and felt his experience could only strengthen them. Joining their ranks, he acted as a liaison between the JSA and JLA. His by-the-books attitude added a maturity to the team, although the looser, more care-free Green Arrow developed a growing dislike for Hawkman's rigid thinking. Soon afterwards, the reluctant hero called Metamorpho was offered membership. But he rejected it, wanting to recover his lost humanity by curing himself of his strange powers, rather than fight crime with them.

Around this time, members like Green Arrow and the Batman began to question the team's role in the world. They argued that the JLA should help the common man more often, while the others only wanted to focus on the larger-scale problems. Batman pondered his role on a high-profile team, believing he could make more of a difference on a smaller scale. Agreeing with the Dark Knight, Green Arrow's outlook was reinforced during this period by the loss of his vast fortune.

The next crisis the League had to face was a betrayal in their own ranks. Snapper Carr was manipulated by the Joker into revealing the location of the Secret Sanctuary. Though the Harlequin of Hate was defeated, the disgraced Snapper relinquished his honorary membership in the group and went on to lead a new life. The team, in turn, was forced to relocate its headquarters. Their new base was an orbiting satellite 22,300 miles above the Earth.

A little while later, the team voted in the Elongated Man and the Red Tornado to their ranks. Sadly, the Tornado, being an android, never quite fitted in with his human comrades. The JLA continued to have fits of expansion and contraction in its ranks. Hawkgirl and the sorceress Zatanna joined, playing an active role in many adventures. The League also offered membership to Black Lightning, but he declined, wanting to focus his attention on his neighborhood of "Suicide Slum" in Metropolis. This attitude affected Green Arrow, who had been questioning his place in the League. After Black Lightning declined, Superman suggested the young hero Firestorm, who was accepted into the team's ranks. Their acceptance of such an inexperienced adventurer, coupled with a growing dissatisfaction with his role on the team, led Green Arrow to resign. But shortly thereafter, he rejoined, feeling the JLA needed his presence.

When the small Western European country of Markovia was taken over by the usurper Baron Bedlam, the nation was plunged into turmoil. Several foreigners were captured, including Lucius Fox of Wayne Enterprises. The Batman wished to save his friend and combat the Baron. The JLA, however, refused to become involved with the international affair, due to the U.N.'s request of non-interference. Disgusted by the League's attitude, Batman quit the team and, alongside several other heroes, he defeated Bedlam and freed the hostages. The various vigilantes then decided to band together under the Batman's leadership. Because they chose to work outside the law, the team adopted the name of The Outsiders.

Justice League No More

Participation in the League emergencies began to decrease as more members were called away by crises of more personal natures (Flash was on trial for murder, the Atom had left to lead a society of six- inch people, etc.). At one low point in the group effort, Aquaman enacted a clause empowered to active founding members and disbanded the League. He then reformed it with a core of heroes who pledged to give it their full attention. Only the Martian Manhunter, Elongated Man and Zatanna agreed to this. But soon four new young heroes were added to the roster (Steel I, Gypsy, Vibe and Vixen). The team set up shop in a high-tech bunker in Detroit and later went back to the satellite HQ. Soon afterwards, Aquaman wished to mend his broken marriage and turned leadership of the team over to the Martian Manhunter.

This new JLA had a short training period. Not long afterward, the League and various other heroes became involved in The Crisis on Infinite Earths. Though they were able to defeat the fiend behind The Crisis, a being from Qward known as the Anti-Monitor, the assault had many casualties. Most devastating was that of the Flash, who'd sacrificed his life in a kamikaze effort to destroy one of the Anti-Monitor's deadly weapons. Following his death, Wally West a.k.a. Kid Flash would take on the mantle of his mentor. He did not, however, join the League, preferring to work alone.

With the Crisis over, J'onzz believed the young heroes of the League were too much for him to handle. He asked the Batman to return to the team to properly train the rookies. Having recently parted ways with the Outsiders, Batman agreed, but only for a trial basis of a year's time. Under Batman, the new team abandoned the satellite HQ, briefly stationing in the Detroit Bunker, until finally moving back into the Secret Sanctuary. Soon after leaving the satellite, the alien terrorist Despero returned and destroyed the orbiting HQ. Angry at finding that the League who had defeated him was disbanded, he attacked the new team only to be defeated once more.

Soon after, an anti-hero sentiment was promoted by a crafty political manipulator, G. Gordon Godfey (who was actually an agent of Darkseid named Glorious Godfrey). The tension grew enough to the point where the President of the U.S. ordered the Martian Manhunter to disband the JLA. This act opened the door for Prof. Ivo and his androids to attack the members of the League separately. The androids murdered Vibe and Steel (Heywood) before being defeated by J'onzz. Demoralized, Gypsy returned to her family, Vixen went into seclusion, and the Elongated Man and Zatanna went their own ways.

After Godfrey was exposed to the world, Dr. Fate (Kent Nelson), a former JSA member, urged various heroes to reform the Justice League. Led by the Batman, the team consisted of Black Canary (Lance), Martian Manhunter, Mr. Miracle, Oberon, Capt. Marvel, Dr. Fate and Guy Gardner (the current Green Lantern). Ted Kord also joined the team, now acting under the identity of the second Blue Beetle.

This version of the League was rife with tension. It was caused primarily by the practical jokes and light-hearted attitude of Blue Beetle and later-member Booster Gold, as well as Guy Gardner's obnoxious treatment of the other members and his overly-outspoken desire to be the team's leader. This attitude led to a fight between the Batman and Gardner, in which the Dark Knight leveled Guy with a single punch and then went on with business as usual, leaving the Green Lantern's unconscious form behind him. This skirmish (if it could be called that) was a major highlight for the other Leaguers. Upon regaining consciousness, Gardner acted with a more sweet-tempered personality for the next several months (what a surprise!).

Almost from the start of this new League, a mysterious entrepreneur, Maxwell Lord IV of Innovation Concepts, wormed his way into the group and manipulated the team to add to their ranks the second Dr. Light (whose stay lasted only days), Booster Gold and The Creeper.

But Lord's power of persuasion had its merits. This new League had problems gaining necessary international access, and Lord assisted the team in gaining diplomatic status under the auspices of the United Nations. The team now called itself Justice League International and soon afterwards the U.N. set up several JLI Embassies for the League to operate in. Capt. Marvel left, believing he was not yet ready to stay with the team. As a compromise to the U.S. and Soviet Governments, U.S. agent Capt. Atom and Russian hero Rocket Red 7 were added to the team. The Batman continued his leadership and Maxwell Lord acted as a U.N. liaison with the JLI. Batman asked the second Hawkman and original Hawkwoman to join, feeling that the team could use some influence from their maturity. The Hawks agreed.

It turned out that not all the Leaguers were what they seemed. It was revealed that Lord was being manipulated by a rogue computer of the New God scientist named Metron. The computer was defeated and Lord was allowed to stay. Rocket Red 7 was discovered to be a spy for the Manhunters, a clandestine organization whose goal is galaxy-wide domination. He was later replaced by Rocket Red 4. And Hawkman II turned out to be a Thanagarian spy. After killing Hawkwoman, he briefly battled the League before he was forced to retreat to his homeworld.

With its new global status, JLI officially added more international heroes to the fold. Two new members were Green Flame from Brazil and Ice Maiden II from Norway. The two heroes renamed themselves Fire and Ice. However, it was this same international spotlight that made the Batman uncomfortable and he left the team. He remained a reserve member, willing to help whenever they required his aid.

Realizing the scope of the menaces facing Earth, the League added more heroes to their ranks and then split into two groups, Justice League America and Justice League Europe. JLA was based in New York and consisted of Martian Manhunter, Guy Gardner, Fire, Ice, Mr. Miracle, Blue Beetle (Kord), Booster Gold and Oberon. JLE set up shop in Paris and consisted of Wonder Woman (Diana), Flash (West), Power Girl, Animal Man, the Elongated Man, Metamorpho, Rocket Red 4 and Captain Atom.

Members came and left. Silver Sorceress, Blue Jay and Crimson Fox joined the JLA. General Glory and two New Gods named Lightray and Orion joined the JLA. Wonder Woman left the JLE after their first mission and Booster Gold later left the JLA. Mr. Miracle was replaced with an android duplicate, which was later destroyed by Despero. And, for a brief time, there was even a Justice League Antarctica.

Things were looking up for both teams . . . until Lord was shot and hospitalized. Without him as a buffer, the United Nations revoked both teams' charters and the groups began to break down. Lord later recovered and had a new team under his control, The Extremists. However, things were still not as they seemed. Lord and The Extremists were being controlled by the Dreamslayer, who had fought the JLE earlier. He then gained control of a group of JLA members but was finally destroyed by the Silver Sorceress, who lost her life in the process.

Too demoralized to continue, the various Leaguers went their separate ways. Martian Manhunter actually left the planet and encountered the sorcerer Bloodwynd. In an attempt to save the sorcerer's life, Martian Manhunter "merged" with him. Hence, Martian Manhunter took on Bloodwynd's guise and manner while the true Bloodwynd's spirit was imprisoned within his Bloodgem.

The teams soon reformed under the direction of Superman, Green Lantern (Jordan) and Aquaman; despite Lord's best efforts, he was gradually phased out of League business. The new JLA, under Superman's leadership, consisted of Fire, Ice, Booster Gold, Guy Gardner (no longer a GL), Blue Beetle (Kord), Bloodwynd (really J'onzz) and Maxima. The new JLE, under GL Hal Jordan's leadership, comprised Flash (West), Elongated Man, Power Girl, Dr. Light (Hoshi), Rocket Red 4, Metamorpho and Crimson Fox.

The U.S. team moved into a new HQ in Manhattan. Soon afterwards, it would have a quick and devastating blow to it: the creature dubbed "Doomsday" attacked the JLA, injuring the various members, putting Blue Beetle in a coma and apparently killing Superman. The team picked up the pieces and eventually brought in Jay Garrick, the original Flash, as a mentor and guiding force.

Earth's heroes attended Superman's funeral during which a statue of him was erected in Metropolis's Centennial Park. A week later, many Leaguers (including some allies and reserve members) did their best to answer the heart-felt requests of several of Superman's fans. The attending heroes saw this act as a final tribute to their fallen comrade.

With Blue Beetle in a coma, the villainous Dr. Destiny saw it as a perfect time to strike. He brought the Leaguers to a distorted dream reality where they fought evil versions of other Leaguers. The Batman aided his comrades in battling these faux leaguers and during the course of the battle Bloodwynd was revealed to be J'onn J'onzz. The JLA was able to defeat the League finally and soon after J'onzz and Bloodwynd were separated from their fusion. J'onzz stayed with the team, although Bloodwynd left to seek his own path.

On the European side, after a dramatic battle with the original Sonar, the team regained the confidence of the U.N. and the two Leagues reemerged into the new Justice League International, adding to its roster the Australian hero called Tasmanian Devil and the Native American archer known as Maya.

Four "new Supermen" arose in the wake of Superman's death. One of these pretenders, Hank Henshaw a.k.a. The Cyborg, actually destroyed Coast City. He was then defeated by the original Superman, revived from his death-like state. Hal Jordan was devastated by the loss of his home. To help him adjust, the Leaguers, past and present, destroyed the Engine City that stood in Coast City's place. Superman finished the little memorial service by erecting a memorial flame in the center of what had once been the city. The only living former Leaguer who was not present at this service was the Batman. Superman had met with him before the service but the Dark Knight said that he couldn't make it to the ceremony due to a case that called for his immediate attention. Unbeknownst to Superman, this was not the true Batman but a former assassin named Azrael who'd assumed the mantle after Wayne had been crippled by an enemy. Within a couple of months, the original Batman would return, stronger than ever.

Soon afterwards, the ever-fickle U.N. dropped its support, which resulted in the JLI disbanding. Immediately following, the crisis known as Zero Hour ensued. Reality and time were threatened and universal destruction seemed a sure thing. After numerous battles that resulted in several deaths, Earth's heroes were horrified to learn that the cataclysm was caused by Hal Jordan, who'd taken the name Parallax. Jordan had been unable to cope with the destruction of his home and decided to remake reality in "the way it should be." With a heavy heart, the heroes were forced to fight and ultimately defeat their former comrade-in-arms.

20,000 Leagues

After Zero Hour, three new factions of the Justice League formed. First, the President of the U.S. asked J'onn J'onzz to form a Justice League Task Force. The Martian Manhunter would thus act as leader for a teams of heroes whose roster would alter depending on the nature of each mission. recruiting a different set of heroes for each crisis that arose. Capt. Atom decided to form the group Extreme Justice, taking with him former Leaguers Maxima, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle (Kord) and the second Amazing Man. Wonder Woman (Diana) then formed a new Justice League America and her team set up shop in a satellite orbiting Earth.

With so many teams, each fighting for legitimacy as well as against super-villains, the heroes wore down. All three teams fell into disarray and most of the members left. Only a few remaining members of the Justice League America made any attempt to act as a team.

When the Sun-Eater threatened to destroy Earth's sun, all Leaguers, past and present, combined their efforts to save their planet from an eternal winter night. Some made active attempts to destroy the Sun- Eater, while others played damage control and tried to alleviate the riots and mob panics that were spreading on Earth. However, it was Parallax who ended up saving the day. Sacrificing his life so that the sun would re-ignite, Hal Jordan died as he'd lived - a hero. Afterwards, the heroes of Earth held a large memorial service for Jordan in what remained of Coast City. Still standing there is an emerald statue of Jordan, clad in his GL uniform. Where once there was nothing but lifeless ash, Swamp Thing was able to cause a lush wilderness to flourish on the remains of Jordan's home.

A couple of changes happened for the League. Superman lost his powers due to the events of the Final Night saga. He later regained them however, and just in time too. For he and several other champions would soon be needed to fight for Earth's survival.

"The World's Greatest Super-Heroes!"

When Dr. Destiny and the mysterious Know Man warped reality so that all of Earth's human population suddenly gained superpowers, they also ensured that Earth's heroes were rendered amnesiacs. Seven heroes were able to regain their memories. These seven iconic figures were Superman, the Batman (Wayne), Wonder Woman (Diana), the Flash (West), Aquaman, the Martian Manhunter and Kyle Rayner, the new (and now only) Green Lantern. These champions banded together to thwart Know Man. During the battle, Dr. Destiny died as the proper reality was restored and Know Man left the heroes with a prophecy of Armageddon. The disaster averted, Batman brought up the subject of how well the seven of them had worked together and, to everyone's surprise, implied that they should continue doing so. The others agreed and the seven champions banded together as the new Justice League of America.

What was left of the former Justice League America and JL Task Force was officially disbanded by the U.N., thus making the new JLA the one and only League. Immediately following, the Flash's hometown of Blue Valley, Nebraska was attacked by a scout group of parasitic aliens. These aliens were led by one referred to as the "Star Conqueror" and they sought racial dominance over the human race. The JLA defeated the scouts when Batman discovered that the aliens had a weakness to extreme cold temperatures.

Several days later, the Earth was visited by the Hyperclan, a group of aliens who claimed to be on a diplomatic mission of peace. It didn't take long for the League to find out (thanks to Batman), that the Hyperclan was using wide-spread mind control and subversive tactics to turn Earth's populace against the JLA. The JLA then began to battle the Hyperclan. Their satellite HQ was destroyed, Metamorpho was apparently killed, and most of the Leaguers were taken prisoner. Things looked grim until Batman and Superman individually learned that the Hyperclan were actually Pale Martians, and thus were vulnerable to fire. With this knowledge, Earth was able to fend off the attack of the invading alien fleet. The Martian Manhunter then used his own mind-powers so that the pale Martians would be forced to continue living on Earth but trapped in human forms, with false human memories replacing their true knowledge.

Following their victory over the Hyperclan, the U.N. set to work building a new HQ for the Justice League on the moon. Using the most advanced Earth science, as well as technology recovered from the Hyperclan, the Watchtower was built.

As the Watchtower neared completion, Superman underwent a radical mutation. His normal powers were becoming increasingly weaker and were giving way to strange unfamiliar energy abilities. Soon, the Man of Tomorrow found himself in danger of dispersing into energy. Using Kryptonian circuits, S.T.A.R. Labs technology and LexCorp polymers, he was able to have a special containment suit made. With his new powers under control, he and his fellow Leaguers then tested the limits of his new abilities.

Soon after the Watchtower was completed, the JLA held a membership drive in order that other heroes might apply for membership. After reviewing the data, the League made its first recruit the new hero called Tomorrow Woman. Unbeknownst to the JLA, Tomorrow Woman was actually an android spy sent by Dr. T. O. Morrow and Prof. Ivo. Her mission was to learn the JLA's secrets and then kill them after gaining their trust. However, as Tomorrow Woman became closer to her teammates she began overriding her programming. After being in the constant presence of the heroes, she developed her own morals and principles based on their own. During a battle with the war-machine called IF, Tomorrow Woman sacrificed herself in a kamikaze effort that destroyed the machine. The League then discovered her true nature and captured the villainous scientists. They then decided that Tomorrow Woman had earned the right to be buried in the Justice League cemetery alongside the other former Leaguers who had since passed on.

Not long after that, the League met up with Zauriel, a former guardian angel who had become mortal after falling in love with the girl he had been protecting. But Zauriel had also been privy to plans by the warrior angel Asmodel, who planned to overthrow Heaven. Asmodel attempted to kill Zauriel and his new allies, leading to a fight between the JLA and a host of angels. Martian Manhunter and Superman took turns wrestling Asmodel before The Flash and GL were able to force the angels back to Heaven. The team offered Zauriel membership but he declined.

After helping them defeat The Key, the new Green Arrow (Connor Hawke) was enrolled into the League. Soon afterwards, the League were involved in a battle that resulted in their arrival to a parallel universe, where they encountered a team of heroes called the WildC.A.T.s. The League was soon able to return home and, aided by the C.A.T.s, they were able to defeat Epoch, the Lord of Time. Not too long after that, J'onn investigated an alien slaying in a mid-western town that was not all that it appeared to be. The encounter left J'onn questioning whether or not he truly belonged among humanity.

When the villainous Brain Trust took the U.N. building hostage, the JLA were ready to beat the bad. One problem: The villains had set up a bomb that was set to go off if it detected any super-powers being used within proximity of the block. So what can the League do? Easy, they sent Batman in. Leading a small number of heroes, Batman was able to take out the terrorists and then had Superman get rid of the bomb. This, along with several previous adventures, caused the younger members to grow a greater sense of respect for the Dark Knight.

The demon lord Neron plagued the League once more when he resurrected the now-soulless Rogues Gallery members and had them wreak havoc on Keystone City. The League tried its best but ultimately it was the Flash and the love he shared with Linda Park that saved the day. Soon after this adventure, the JLA welcomed the rookie hero Aztek to their ranks. Soon afterwards, Asmodel showed up again, nearly killing J'onn and putting his final plans of divine domination into play. Helping him was Neron. J'onn was saved by the combined efforts of Aztek, Batman and Flash. Zauriel defeated Asmodel, who was sent to Hell as a servant to Neron.

After dealing with the Genesis wave, the League engaged in a match of wits with the newly formed Injustice Gang, led by Lex Luthor. Luthor had discovered the Philosopher's Stone, a weapon that allowed the wielder's thoughts to become reality. During the course of the adventure, Green Lantern, Flash and Aquaman were transported to a possible future where Darkseid ended up taking over the planet and almost all the heroes were killed. The heroes learned from the new Hourman (an android from the 850th century) that this had been a result of the League defeating the Injustice Gang and destroying the Stone. The three adventurers journeyed back into the past. While they missed out on their teammates' victory, they were able to prevent the Stone's destruction. The Stone was then passed on to the New God Metron, who said that the League and their contemporaries were merely the forerunners of a greater breed to come.

Things seemed like they were about to quiet down, until senior Leaguers Batman, Superman and Aquaman made a shocking announcement. They were disbanding the Justice League of America!
