WHAT IS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE?
It all began in the winter of 1940 with the third issue of ALL STAR COMICS. What it contained was a simple story by today’s standards - a group of heroes meeting together to discuss and swap stories. That story was the genesis of the shared universe comic stories that today form the foundation of DC, Marvel, Image and a dozen smaller publishers. ALL STAR COMICS #3 opened up the way for teams made up of characters from different titles, it also showed us the original archetype for those teams - the Justice Society of America (JSA)
The JSA introduced a slew of competitors such as the Freedom Fighters and the Seven Soldiers of Victory (both now contemporaries of the JSA due to the Crisis on Infinite Earths). As the superhero comic declined after the war the JSA disappeared with them. It was not to be the end of it for the legacy of the JSA was realised scant decades later by their original creator Gardner F. Fox as he introduced the world to the revamped heroes of DC, together as the Justice League of America (JLA)
Since the first appearance of the JLA in BRAVE AND THE BOLD #28 it has spawned three series of comics, five spin off series and nearly a dozen specials and mini-series. Upon this the JLA has appeared in a live action TV pilot, a classic animated TV series (the Superfriends & Aquaman), guest starred on the BBC Superman Radio Play, has it's own toyline (Total Justice) and had for a time it's own computer game.
Some might point out that the X-Men have done this and a whole lot more, but that is not the point. The X-Men are fighting against the establishment, the Avengers are the establishment, whereas the JLA are beyond the establishment. They are the pantheon against which all absolutes are measured. They existed first and when all others have crumbled it is only the icons of the JLA & JSA that will remain standing.
