INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Captain's Justice League Homepage your source for the most in-depth articles, profiles and material on the Justice League from the Golden Age to the present New Era.

We have two major new sections here at the Captain's Justice League Homepage. The first is the Worlds of the Multiverse which will eventually grow into a guide to the cosmology of the DCU. Then next up we have the JLA Casebook, this new feature will contain files on each of the issues of the current series, I'll be adding new issues just after they are collected togther in reprints.

QUESTION: I'm thinking of converting this site to frames and was wondering if anybody has any feelings on this? If so please email me at with our feedback form.

In the works: Section 2 of Q&A: The JLA/DCU Timeline; Golden Age profiles of the founders of the JSA including Hawkman (all of them!), the Spectre, Jay Garrick and Alan Scott (after the Heart of Darkness mini); Profiles of the new roster from JLA #16 and a Captain Atom Profile - just because I think he's cool.

STOP PRESS:

  • Eric Luke (GHOST) takes over from John Bryne as writer of Wonder Woman he is joined by penciller Yannick Paquette (WARRIOR NUN AREALA) while Walter Simonson is scheduled to replace Bryne on JACK KIRBY’S FORTH WORLD. • There is a possibility of the sequel to JLA YEAR ONE. DC have asked Mark Waid and co. to do a sequel but they have tentative plans of their own for characters in question.

JLA AGES

The JLA and JSA can be thought to exist as four discrete stages. The Golden Age (the JSA formation to HUAC dissolution), the Silver Age (JLA formation to the Crisis), the Bronze Age (Legends to the cancellation of the second JLA series) and the New Era (Midsummer Nightmare onwards).

WHAT IS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE?

It all began in the winter of 1940 with the third issue of ALL STAR COMICS. What it contained was a simple story by today’s standards - a group of heroes meeting together to discuss and swap stories. That story was the genesis of the shared universe comic stories that today form the foundation of DC, Marvel, Image and a dozen smaller publishers. ALL STAR COMICS #3 opened up the way for teams made up of characters from different titles, it also showed us the original archetype for those teams - the Justice Society of America (JSA)

The JSA introduced a slew of competitors such as the Freedom Fighters and the Seven Soldiers of Victory (both now contemporaries of the JSA due to the Crisis on Infinite Earths). As the superhero comic declined after the war the JSA disappeared with them. It was not to be the end of it for the legacy of the JSA was realised scant decades later by their original creator Gardner F. Fox as he introduced the world to the revamped heroes of DC, together as the Justice League of America (JLA)

Since the first appearance of the JLA in BRAVE AND THE BOLD #28 it has spawned three series of comics, five spin off series and nearly a dozen specials and mini-series. Upon this the JLA has appeared in a live action TV pilot, a classic animated TV series (the Superfriends & Aquaman), guest starred on the BBC Superman Radio Play, has it's own toyline (Total Justice) and had for a time it's own computer game.

Some might point out that the X-Men have done this and a whole lot more, but that is not the point. The X-Men are fighting against the establishment, the Avengers are the establishment, whereas the JLA are beyond the establishment. They are the pantheon against which all absolutes are measured. They existed first and when all others have crumbled it is only the icons of the JLA & JSA that will remain standing.
