Reported on Mania: DC #1,000,000 This week DC Comics revealed plans for this year's annual DCU-wide crossover event. Tentatively entitled DC ONE MILLION, this month long September event is conceived by co-creators GRANTMORRISON (writer) and VAL SEMEIKS (penciler) and according to DC "will catapult the DC Universe one million months into the future - the year that every DCU title celebrates its one millionth issue!" As Morrison himself describes it, "the future of the 853rd century (!) is stranger and more wonderful than can be described - a universe in which the threats to society have evolved just as quickly as society itself. But patterns have repeated themselves through time, genes have resurfaced and combined in strangely familiar ways to produce the charter members of Justice Legion A, the mightiest gathering of super-humans in the 853rd century. Life has exploded into space like a dandelion, changing over the hundreds of centuries into a society on the edge of our understanding, where power and information transactions are performed on a galactic scale, where the lines between humanity and super-humanity have grown increasingly blurred. In this universe, the wildest, most majestic elements of the DC Universe are given free reign, and each JLAer patrols a different world of the solar system." The 4 weekly issues of DC ONE MILLION, supported by the #1,000,000 issues of every DCU title, will center around the 20th century JLA and their future counterparts. "Having been brought to the 853rd century to be honored by the future they have ensured through their heroic actions, the JLA finds itself entangled with a malevolent entity unlike anything ever encountered. Ranging across the Solar System from the icy wastes of Pluto to the very heart of the Sun, the JLA enlists the unique and unparalleled powers of the super-evolved heroes that inhabit Sol'sheavenly bodies in their struggle to contain the destruction wrought by their seemingly unconquerable foe." "One of the real advantages of the JLA's monthly format is the opportunity to plant the seeds of future stories from issue to issue," said the project's editor Dan Raspler. "In the ROCK OF AGES saga, for example (a trade paperback collection of which will be solicited in the March PREVIEWS), we introduced the new Hourman. As the ONE MILLION series unfolds we'll see how crucial our new Master of Time is to the JLA's ability to combat their awful nemesis." "When Grant first pitched the idea to me, I couldn't stop smiling," Raspler continued. "It's great not only because it's futuristic and imaginative and dramatic, but also because it's so well integrated into the DC Universe. DC ONE MILLION is inextricably part of the great legacy and history DC Comics and our universe. It's optimistic and grand. "It's exciting working with an experienced fan-favorite writer who's so clearly at the top of his form. Grant's always written big stories - the only difference is now he's playing with the biggest characters in the history of comics.". JOHN OSTANDER TO DO MARTIAN MANHUNTER SERIES JOHN OSTRANDER has provided more details regarding his new MARTIAN MANHUNTER ongoing series (with TOM MANDRAKE) that he announced over this past weekend. According to Ostrander, the series will launch late this summer with a #0 origin issue. Following that will be a #1,000,000 issue tying into DC's ONE MILLION September crossover, and then the series' "first official issue" will appear the next month. The writer plans on coordinating the title very closely with the events of the monthly JLA, and addressed this issue in an email to Newsarama. "I don't know how directly I'll be talking with Grant Morrison, since he's pretty busy (although I'm ready if he's available), it will probably be with editor Dan Raspler. I've asked for any and all plots and/or overviews as they come in so I can plan what we do around them (I'm a nice little boy who plays well with others). My hope is to make reference between the books as often as possible," wrote Ostrander. "Some of what we plan to do has already been alluded to...J'onn has different alter-egos around the world and we'll play off those," Ostrander continued. "Also, since he's the Martian MANHUNTER, he should MANHUNT. I see him as being more active than reactive; if the bad guy is out there and is wanted, go look for them. Don't wait for them to come to you. "As with SPECTRE, we'll probably be adapting his origin a bit. There are multiple versions to choose from so, as I think about him and delve into the character, what makes him tick, how he does what he does, I'll pick and choose. I don't intend to invalidate anyone's stories but I may emphasize this or that. It's important that those who don't know the character don't feel bogged down with continuity they never heard (just as it's important to me that they long time fan doesn't feel slighted). If someone hasn't read the character before, I want them coming away thinking this is cool, just as I want the long-time fan to feel satisfied as well. "J'onzz will also being the leader in dealing with other aliens on planet. This is in keeping with the fact that he himself is alien. Actually, to me, that's one of the most intriguing questions about J'onn: he can assume the identity or appearance of anyone. So why does hepresent himself in so deliberately an alien manner? Why this beetle- brown green man? "His ties with the JLA are VERY important. In some ways, he's the linchpin. He was there at the beginning and has been in so many versions since. To my mind, they're inextricably linked. "Anyway, that's all for now." Ostrander concluded. "I'm still gathering my thoughts; this has all happened so fast! I think we're going to be cool and people will have fun." Previous News: Jan/Feb 1997
