THE
SILVER AGE
Almost twenty years after it was first created the Justice Society was no more, it and many other titles had suffered during the post war comics decline. However when sales did once again pick up then DC Comics commissioned editor Julius Schwartz to update the JSA. Schwartz called in Gardner Fox (creator of the JSA) to create this new team and with BRAVE AND THE BOLD #28 the world got it's first look at the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA.
Soon after the League gained it's own book and ran for 261 issues from summer 1960 to April 1987. During that time the League made hundreds of guest appearances, spawned their own cartoon show (the Superfriends), met and teamed up with the Justice Society from Earth -2, disbanded and then reformed with new members. The characters of the Justice League entered the psyche of the American public (maybe even the world), such icons as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, et al.
According to popular legend when the then Marvel boss saw the Justice League he ordered Stan Lee to create something similar and to Lee's credit he created something that was totally different in the form of the Fantastic Four.
